Some part numbers are not one product but a family. The 1N4148 is the clearest example in small-signal diodes: several manufacturers build it, the part number is common across them, and a bill of materials that lists “1N4148” without a manufacturer is both easy to fill and easy to fill incorrectly.

The same base number appears in our catalogue under several manufacturers, which is the normal situation for a commodity diode. The <a href=”/manufacturers/”>manufacturer index</a> is the quicker route when you are deliberately looking for alternatives rather than a specific brand.
What is genuinely common across the family. The function: a small-signal silicon switching diode for general-purpose use. The approximate ratings: low current, moderate reverse voltage, fast switching. The through-hole and surface-mount variants of the same base number share those characteristics within their own datasheet limits.
What is not common across the family. The suffix. 1N4148WS, 1N4148WT and 1N4148X-TP are different parts: the suffix usually identifies the package, and sometimes the manufacturer’s own series within that package. A BOM that carries the base number and a footprint for one suffix will not necessarily accept a quotation for another, and the substitution is a mechanical change, not just a paperwork one.
What actually decides interchangeability. Compare the parameters that the circuit depends on: forward voltage at the operating current, reverse recovery time if the diode switches, junction capacitance if it sits on a signal line, reverse leakage at the operating temperature, and the power dissipation in the intended package. Then compare the package and the pinout against the footprint. Two diodes that both say 1N4148 can differ enough in reverse recovery and capacitance to change a switching circuit’s behaviour.
Why commodities are still worth qualifying. The commercial argument for using a widely second-sourced part is real: it is easier to source, it is less exposed to a single manufacturer’s allocation, and it is usually cheaper. The engineering argument for qualifying it is equally real: interchangeability must be established from datasheets, not from the part number. The practical compromise is to qualify one alternative properly, record the parameter comparison, and treat the rest of the family as candidates rather than as drop-in equivalents.
A note on the quotation. When you request a commodity part, state the suffix or the package you need, and say explicitly whether alternatives are acceptable. That single sentence is what prevents a quotation that is technically responsive and mechanically wrong.
